ThermaTech was chosen for a prestigious restoration project at Kensington Palace
Outside Kensington Palace stands a statue of Queen Victoria sculpted by her daughter, Princess Louise, to celebrate 50 years of her mother’s reign.
The statue was nearly destroyed during the Second World War when a German bomb blew off the tip of Queen Victoria’s nose. This was replaced in 1952 for the accession of HM Queen Elizabeth II. Tthe Palace’s £12m transformation was completed in 2012 in time for the present Queen’s Silver Jubilee.
The Problem
A solution was needed for the removal of surface dust, grime, algae, bird droppings and pollution deposits from the Portland stone pedestal and paving around the statue.
The system was used at Kensington Palace particularly for paint removal, from some lower external elevations, prior to an application of a ‘mineralic’ paint product, which required a thorough and effective removal, of certain previously applied, paint coatings.
The Problem

The cleaning project was undertaken by specialist stone conservation company Taylor Pearce.
For cleaning applications, the high temperatures of ThermaTech are capable of both cleaning and to a degree ‘sterilising’ a substrate, which helps prevent a fast re-colonisation of algael soilings. The difference when using ThermaTech on the digital control option, means the water is far less prone to the larger fluctuations of heat, that are frequently seen with earlier version, analogue controllers.
The particular digital controller that ThermaTech uses, detects far smaller changes in heat and in turn, controls the boiler far more accurately, resulting in higher temperature output and reliable performance.
